Message from the Chairman

John Cameron

As Chairman of the Long Island Regional Planning Council (LIRPC), I welcome you to our official website. I hope you find this site informative and useful in your quest for information on the LIRPC and the many initiatives that we focus on.

The Regional Planning Council has worked diligently over the past two years with a consulting team headed up by the international planning firm, Arup, in the development of LI 2035, our 25-year Sustainability Plan. The Plan addresses issues critical for Long Island’s future health and viability. The Plan was developed in four (4) thematic areas: the Economy, Tax and Governance, Infrastructure and Equity. The Plan and its associated documents which provided valuable data in the formulation of the Plan will be accessible through this website as the documents become available.

In furtherance of the Council’s goals of achieving Sustainability, the Council worked closely with its Education Working Group to deal with issues of K-12 Educational Achievement and Cost Containment. The Group comprised of representatives of the Council, the Nassau and Suffolk School Boards and Superintendents Associations, BOCES, and the New York State Union of Teachers (NYSUT). As a result of eight (8) months of meetings and constructive dialogue and discernment, the Group issued its 12-Point Plan of Action on October 28, 2010. The Plan recommendations can be accessed through this website.

The Council, in addition to serving in its role as the Regional Planner, serves as an advocate for important issues affecting Long Island. Whether it be working with our Federal, State or Local legislators on critical legislation or funding or designating “Projects of Regional Significance” to ensure the timely approval or rejection of major projects, or educating the general public and our legislators on key planning issues, the Council serves as the Regional Steward overseeing the overall health and well-being of Long Island.

Thank you for your interest in the Long Island Regional Planning Council and feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have. We invite you to visit our site often, as updates will take place on an ongoing basis and attend any of our meetings if your schedule permits.

Let us work together to ensure that Long Island remains a great place to live for generations to come.

John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., Chairman
